Maison de Soins

- Bascharage

Maison 8 is a care facility designed to smoothly integrate with its environment, both in its topographical response and spatial organization. The compact four-story structure unfolds around two interior courtyards, ensuring optimal natural light and orientation while reinforcing a clear circulation system. The height of the building is carefully adjusted to blend into the surrounding landscape, aligning with the adjacent sports hall without disrupting the urban scale.

The facility is structured to enhance ease of movement, intuitive circulation, and a strong sense of orientation. The building’s figure-eight form ensures that movement follows continuous, legible pathways, always leading residents back to a central point of reference. The two open-air courtyards serve as spatial anchors, providing natural light, fresh air, and visual continuity throughout the interiors

The surroundings and courtyards are defined by thoughtfully curated vegetation, enhancing the sensory experience and promoting well-being and orientation for residents. The landscape strategy includes retention basins that direct runoff from impermeable surfaces into controlled drainage zones, ensuring environmental responsiveness.

At the heart of the structure, each floor groups together communal spaces, ensuring that shared lounges, dining areas, and essential services remain highly accessible. The single rooms are arranged along the building’s circulation loops, each featuring a private entrance, integrated storage, and en-suite bathroom. This layout optimizes staff efficiency, minimizes unnecessary travel distances, and maximizes outward views—with no resident rooms oriented to the north.

The ground floor integrates a range of functions, balancing resident comfort and public interaction. Half of the level is dedicated to reception, administration, and essential resident services—including a small grocery store, hairdresser, quiet space, medical room, and therapy areas for occupational and physiotherapy treatments.

Additional communal amenities include sunlit terraces to the south, shaded outdoor spaces to the north, and interior courtyards designed for relaxation and movement. Around twenty resident rooms are also housed on this level.

A flexible dining area connects to a multipurpose hall, allowing for modular configurations that accommodate larger events and community gatherings.

Materiality and Architectural Expression

The façade of Maison 8 is defined by light-colored facing brick, ensuring a timeless, durable, and contextual integration into its surroundings. The simple and rational material palette reinforces the building’s clarity and warmth, balancing a sense of stability with a welcoming atmosphere.

Windows & Daylight Strategy

Protruding metal frames create a dynamic play of light and shadow, subtly reinforcing the rhythm of the façade

Low window sills ensure that residents have unobstructed outward views, even while seated

Micro-perforated horizontal blinds maintain privacy while filtering sunlight, with interior curtains providing full blackout options at night

A Spatial Framework for Care and Well-Being

Maison 8 is designed to be more than just a care facility—it is a structured yet welcoming environment that fosters autonomy, clarity, and comfort. Its looped circulation system and open courtyards define a navigable, intuitive, and light-filled space, ensuring that residents always feel oriented and at home. The careful balance between private retreats and social engagement, structured movement and flexibility, clarity and warmth makes Maison 8 a model for contemporary care architecture, where spatial design and human well-being are intrinsically linked.
