We are proud to announce that our design for the renovation and expansion of the Gymnasium am Schloss in Saarbrücken has won the competition in Germany.

The project transforms this historic school site through a carefully staged development that integrates the existing buildings with new, functional, and barrier-free structures. A clear architectural concept divides the campus into three main construction phases, creating a cohesive and modern learning environment while respecting the historic context, including nearby listed buildings. The design introduces a prominent new entrance, open learning landscapes, library, sports hall, a cafeteria, classrooms and auditorium, all linked by a central lobby that fosters transparency, interaction, and a sense of school identity.

Hybrid construction combining wood and concrete reduces the carbon footprint, while extensive green roofs, solar panels, and rainwater retention support biodiversity and renewable energy use. The existing historic building is energetically upgraded through roof renewal, high-performance windows, and interior insulation without compromising its architectural identity. Natural ventilation, passive night cooling, daylight optimization, and energy-efficient systems ensure comfort for students and staff. The campus also provides generous outdoor spaces, a bicycle cellar, and parking in line with sustainable mobility goals, delivering a future-proof, environmentally responsible, and high-quality educational environment.
