Living and Working Unit Lot D

- Ville Haute, Luxembourg

# Award Winner

Living and Working Unit Lot D is a project within the renovation and urban renewal of the historic center. Located along Côte d’Eich and Rue du Nord, the project offers an intervention that respects the established urban fabric while integrating commercial and residential functions to create an active street front. With a focus on social impact and sustainability, the design introduces mixed-use spaces that foster community interaction, support local economic activity, and promote environmentally responsible practices.

At the ground level, retail spaces and a restaurant area create an active interface with the street, inviting public engagement. Above, residential units offer private retreats within an urban oasis. This layered approach blends commercial and living spaces, maintaining privacy while fostering a sense of community and connection to nature throughout the site.

Urban Integration and Facade Reinterpretation

The building’s exterior is thoughtfully divided into three sections to align with adjacent structures. At street level, a glass facade defines the commercial area, establishing a direct connection with the city. The upper levels feature a robust plaster finish that distinguishes the residential zone. In response to the narrowness of Côte d’Eich, the window openings are tilted, creating new visual links toward Place du Théâtre and Grand-Rue and reimagining traditional typologies.

Residential Retreat and Garden

Inside, the residential area is designed as a quiet retreat from urban activity. A central garden provides a dedicated space for relaxation, creating a buffer against street noise and offering a peaceful environment for residents.

Greenery and Connectivity
A network of pathways and landscaped areas interconnects the project’s various zones. This arrangement links public and private spaces and reinforces the connection between nature and the built environment.

Modern Integration with the Existing Context
The design introduces contemporary elements that blend with the historic surroundings without disruption. This careful integration enhances functionality while preserving the character of the established urban fabric.

Facade

Incorporating wood elements into the facade adds texture and warmth to the overall design. These details create a subtle contrast with the glass and plaster, enhancing the building’s character and establishing a tactile connection to nature that reinforces the project’s commitment to environmentally responsible design.

Blending Retail, Dining, and Residential
The project adapts to its context by merging retail spaces at the ground level, a restaurant area, and residential units above. This layered approach creates an environment that invites public engagement while maintaining resident privacy, forming an urban oasis within a dynamic city center.
