Multifunctional sports field

More than just a sports facility - Leiwen, Germany

The planned multifunctional sports field in Leiwen, a municipality in the Schweich district of Germany, will be more than just a sports facility; it will become a space for sport, recreation, and social interaction for the entire community and the wider region. By linking sports, leisure, and green spaces, an attractive open space with an inviting environment is created, one that supports both physical activity and recreational use, designed to be intergenerational, open, and future-oriented.

Harmonious new recreational spaces

The site is deeply rooted in the region’s wine heritage, surrounded for kilometres by vineyards and wineries. A network of trails and hiking paths weaves through the valley, offering attractive activities for tourists arriving by campervan or bicycle. Within this context, the new sports park in Leiwen provides an opportunity to re-establish a social and ecological framework across the town, guiding both residents and visitors toward harmonious new recreational spaces. The design broadens the site’s functions, moving beyond conventional sports facilities to create multigenerational uses that make the park a welcoming destination for locals, tourists, families, and children.

The project challenges conventional approaches to running track and sports field design by introducing greater spatial flexibility. While the standard 250-metre running track remains the central element, it is complemented by a meandering pathway that winds through wildflower fields, encouraging slower and more contemplative movement. The proposal enhances the site’s permeability, biodiversity, spatial harmony, and overall connectivity. The landscape design draws inspiration from prairie and wildflower typologies to support pollinators and ensure low-maintenance vegetation. Although the existing trees are prominent, they are mainly located at the site’s edges and limited to two primary species. Introducing new trees with varied sizes and seasonal colours enriches the park’s green structure, increases ecological diversity, and brings nature deeper into the site.
