The new Primary School in Salmtal is conceived as an open, identity-shaping place of learning that combines education, community and sustainability in a contemporary architectural language. The aim is to create a clear, child-friendly campus that integrates harmoniously into the local context and surrounding landscape.
Primary School with Single-Court Sports Hall
A village of learning. - Salmtal, Germany
The ensemble consists of several single-storey building volumes constructed in timber, each assigned to one age group. These clearly legible “learning houses” create orientation and a strong sense of identity: every age group can relate to and identify with its own building as a dedicated learning environment. The individual volumes are linked by a central circulation zone, forming a connected yet clearly structured school campus.
Classrooms and shared spaces open towards the schoolyard, creating fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor learning areas. The single-court sports hall is functionally connected but remains readable as an independent volume and can be used separately from the school.
Structurally, the project is based on a resource-efficient timber construction. Exposed timber surfaces create a warm, stimulating atmosphere. Combined with durable, low-maintenance building systems and energy-efficient technologies, the school forms a sustainable building with low life-cycle costs.
